| 1 This was the first ad in my collection, back in December 1955! 2 In March 2001, a print of this scene, measuring 23½x31½" was offered for sale by auction on e-Bay. The description read: "The original painting by Jamison Clift of Santa Fe (nephew of former actor, Montgomery Clift) was inspired by a photograph taken in 1957 [???] of the first auto allowed on Pueblo property after a ban on automobile traffic was lifted in an effort to attract more tourism. The couple in the print are reportedly from Los Angeles, and were on a cross-country trip along old Route 66." In fact the lady is a model, hired for the shoot; she is wearing a "desert-fruit" chiffon dress by Pauline Trigère; the driver in the print was added by Mr. Clift to give credence to his story; he does not appear in the original ad/photo. 3 Enthusiast Doug Houston wrote in the CLC Forum (March, 2004): Connell Cadillac was one of the big Cadillac dealers in the Detroit area, On Jos. Campau [street], and owned by Cal Connell. The other brother had Dick Connell Chevrolet. I can't accurately tell how the dealings went, but apparently Cal Connell was into boating, and since he was a Cadillac dealer, he was able to buy incomplete engines and equip them with the proper accesories for marine application. These marine engines went out under the name "Crusader". They had a good reputation. Cadillac engines could hack it, as they had good torque at low-medium speed. |
