**** Cadillac began 1968 with a new power plant. The 472 became one of the most
powerful Cadillac engines (alongside the V-16). Rated at 390 HP, Cadillacs of the
1968-1973 vintage became muscle cars wearing tuxedos.
A Turbo Hydramatic 400 transmission provides smooth shifting as well as a very
civilized ride. Step on the gas though, and the shifting becomes a kick in the pants
taking you from 0-100 in less than 15 seconds. At 4000 pounds, this car is definitely not
a slalom driver; But when you have 500 ft/lbs of torque, you can correct any kind of
steering deficiencies with the gas pedal.
Indeed, this power plant is still alive. Just go to any NHRA meet, and you will see
variants of the 472 in dragsters and pro-stockers. The motor is a very well designed piece
of machinery. At 191,000 miles, mine still can cruise down the highway without skipping a
beat. Gas mileage is pretty good considering the magnitude of things. On the city I get
around 12 miles to the gallon (that's if I don't use the local stop light as a skid pad).
On the highway is where the Caddy is king. I average around 17 mpg at 60 mph. Once I
makeshift connected a tachometer to see what rpm's I pull on the highway. It barely
registered 1800 rpm's at 65 mph. No wonder.
The Eldorado enjoyed the same power plant with the obvious exception of the front wheel
drive transmission. Aside from the different exteriors, just like the previous year,
Eldorados and De Villes shared the same interiors.
One detail to keep in mind for those who own, or plan to own a 1968 Cadillac is the
fact that GM had a strike that year. So there are two different VIN eras when referring to
certain parts. I guess the engineers had time to make some changes during the strike, as
some of these items became standard for the 1969 model year. The changes made were to the
air conditioning system as well as the power steering system. Also, 1968 Cadillacs
resemble the body style of the 1967's, but don't be fooled when looking for parts. Body
wise, their hoods are unique since 1968 was the first year of the unexposed windshield
wipers. Hence, the hood is slightly longer on the 68. Rear bumpers on the 67's have a
valence panel that matches the body color as opposed to an all chrome bumper on the 68.
interiors on both models are very different as well. ****

degrees V-type: bore 4.30, stroke 4.06, displacement 472 cu. in. Max. torque 525 ft.-lbs.
Engine mounted in rubber at three points. Compression ratio 10 to 1.
NEW: ELDORADO: V-8 ENGINE: Displacement, 8.2 litters. 400-HP.
Torque, 550 ft.-lbs. Compression ratio, 10 to 1. Bore, 4.30. Stroke, 4.304
PISTONS: Aluminum alloy, slipper-type cam,
ground to reduce friction surfaces and permit nesting between crankshaft counterweights.
CARBURETOR: Quadrajet four-barrel downdraft
with equalized manifold, mechanical fuel pump, dry-type air filter, improved automatic
choke. Controlled combustion system reduces hydrocarbons in exhaust.
LUBRICATION: Full-pressure. Full-flow oil
filter.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:
12-volt. 15-plate battery. High-capacity, 42-amp. generator (55-amp., air conditioned
cars).
GASOLINE TANK CAPACITY: Approximately 26 gallons. Eldorado approximately 24.
TURBO HYDRA-MATIC: Fully automatic, torque-converter type with fixed stator. Converter
multiplies engine torque for increased driving thrust to drive wheels during acceleration
in any gear (low, intermediate or high).
REAR AXLE:
New, heavier, stronger rear axle and differential. Ratio is 2.93 to 1 (3.07 to 1 on
Eldorado), 3.15 to 1 axle ratio on Seventy-Five models. Available (except Eldorado) is the
Controlled Differential, which directs power to the rear wheel having better traction.
FRONT SUSPENSION:
New integral steering knuckle for greater dependability and longer life. Independent,
helical-coil-type springs. Rubber-mounted strut rods and rubber bushings absorb impacts
and isolate road noise. (Torsion bar suspension on Eldorado.)
REAR SUSPENSION:
Four-link drive. Rear springs are helical-coil-type. Rubber bushings for quieter, softer
ride. (Single-leaf springs with two horizontal and two vertical shock absorbers on
Eldorado.)
BRAKES: Cadillac power brakes with
self-adjusting feature; composite finned rear drums; disc front. Split hydraulic master
cylinder provides for independent operation of front and rear brakes.
PARKING BRAKE:
True auxiliary brake ... will not lock in position with engine running and car in gear ...
can be operated as a foot emergency brake while car is in motion. Automatically releases
when transmission is in drive with engine running.
STEERING: Cadillac variable-ratio power
steering is standard equipment (fixed-ratio on Seventy-Five models). Overall steering
ratio of 16.6 to 1 (except 18.2 to 1 on Seventy-Five models and 16.3 to 1 on Eldorado).
38.5' turning angle provides fast response and short turning diameter.
FRAME: Perimeter frame is boxed in its entire
length. Eldorado has a frame especially designed for its front-wheel drive and front and
rear suspension systems.
TIRES: Low-pressure, size L78 x 15,
bias-belted, fiberglass, tubeless, on all models. Black sidewalls, standard; white
sidewalls optional, at extra cost
CORNERING LIGHTS:
On the side of front fenders, activated by directional signal lever when headlamp switch
is on. They project a beam of light from the side of the car, thus illuminating roadside
and road signs for convenience at night.
TREAD: Front and rear, 63" (Eldorado,
63.5" front 63" rear).
WHEELBASE: 129.5" (Fleetwood Sixty
Special and Brougham, 133", Fleetwood Seventy-Five 149.8", Eldorado 120").
OVERALL LENGTH:
225" (Fleetwood Sixty Special and Brougham 228.5", Fleetwood Seventy-Five,
245.3", Eldorado, 221")
ADDITIONAL BODY COLORS
not shown on cars illustrated include: Patina Silver, Cotillion White, Phantom Gray, San
Mateo Red, Sable Black, Glenmore Green, Sauterne, Dark Walnut, Monarch Burgundy, Regency
Bronze Firemist and Chateau Mauve Firemist.
NOTE: Richly textured vinyl is provided in
certain areas of leather-trimmed Fleetwood and De Ville models.
Easy ID: Similar grille to 1969 model but unmistakable
vertical "wings" on leading edge of front fenders; new tail lights (together
with the "wings", this feature is the easiest way to distinguish the 1970 cars)
(body styles): (see also Eldorado section, below); De
Ville 2-door convertible (C&D card set); Eldorado 2-door Coupe (C&D card
set); "Blood Sweat and Tears" special stretched limousine (special issue CCIX,
p.24).
